Tonka was established in 1946 with the intention of manufacturing garden implements but soon began selling metal toys. Original known at Mound Metalcraft it changed it's name to Tonka Toys in 1955. Tonka was acquired by Hasbro in 1991 and 1998 began a licensing deal with Funrise Toys to manufacture and distribute Tonka trucks. It began with versions of the trucks fitted with electonics for lights and sounds. Although Tonka products are still being made today it is the early mostly metal trucks that are the most sought after by collectors.
